Often we hear people say,
"My grandmother lived to be a hundred......."
"My parents are well and healthy and in their eighties...."
This generation we refer to was not given an elixir to drink, they were simply on a food intake that was unadulterated and pure. This is from where our story begins.
In search of an 'Elixir' in the modern day wherein what sells is only chemicals and pesticides in everything we consume. In our search we realized that prevalent milk we consumed was most toxic and a ticking time bomb for the young generation and the ones to come. Books like 'Devil in the milk' by K.B. Woodward and extensive research led us to establishing an indigenous cows (desi cows) dairy farm, Brij Amrit. In keeping with the adage 'Old is Gold' and the fact that Indians have survived and thrived on desi cows milk for at least last 5000 years, we were convinced that the path we have chosen was a step towards a better and healthy life.
Our conviction was vindicated by our customers, especially when they complimented us saying the taste and texture of our milk reminds them of their childhood.
The founder of Brij Amrit dairy farm, Amardeep, is a Nature lover to his core. He is an alumni of Thapar college and holds a Finance degree in Business studies from LSC, London. An ardent mountaineer, he often keeps himself engaged in some animal welfare programs. Deeply passionate about Integrated natural farming, he has played the role of Lead - Organic Farming with NGOs such as Roundglass Foundation.
What Amardeep has to say about his journey?
"When you do something you love, work becomes meditation. I am lucky to have found my calling, and it wouldn't have been possible without the timely intervention of my mentor and guru, Prof Mandeep Singh (Mandy sir). Starting a dairy farm of indigenous cows was the need of the hour and hence Brij Amrit came into being in 2013. I fondly remember our first cow, Ganga, coming to the farm on March 3, 2013. You know you are on the right track when things start falling into place effortlessly. Many people came ahead to help me wholeheartedly and also became my customers. It was like a community building where I just had a role to play. I am not saying the journey was without challenges, as a matter of fact, we faced many ups and downs like any other venture or business would do. However, there has been always this faith in Mother Nature being constantly at play in our favor."
"Our motto, 'We care' says it all. It's a holistic approach. Our cows need food and it's in our hands whether we provide pesticides and chemical laden green fodder or healthy organic green fodder. Our cows' health would directly affect the quality of their milk which is consumed by our customers. Cows live for their calves. So it's in our hands how well we keep these calves. If the calves get their due share of milk, are healthy and are in close vicinity of their mother cows, both will be happy. Happy cows will give healthy milk. The care of customers' health is automatically being taken care of. We take care of our workers who tend to our cows. A happy worker would tend to our cows with more patience and care. We use glass bottles for packaging of our milk and not plastic bottles or plastic pouches. We say no to plastic to take care of our planet and the customers' health is again being taken care of. Our fields are providing us with the fodder and other food grains. It's in our hands how we keep our soils healthy and increase its biomass. We have a limited source of underground water, how judiciously we use it is in our hands. Would we burn the crop residue and along with it burn so many microbes and other visible and invisible life forms or shall we plough it in to convert it into biomass? The choice is ours. Ever since 2013, we have been doing organic farming. We care, for our customers, our cows, our fields, and our workers."
